Denver Water states its water tends to form scale, that an initial scale usually takes two to five years to form, and that it continues to build up over time. It also reports the water is slightly harder in winter, when waterways and reservoirs freeze, and softer from late spring through fall, when runoff dilutes the minerals.
Denver Water classifies the water it delivers as soft to moderately hard: its southern collection system is moderately hard and its northern collection system is somewhat soft. Aurora Water is a separate system, drawing from the Arkansas, Colorado and South Platte river basins, storing water in 12 reservoirs, and running the Prairie Waters potable reuse system since 2010. Denver Water estimates 60,000 to 64,000 homes in its service area may have a lead service line. It publishes an address lookup map, provides free pitcher filters and free lead sample kits, and is replacing lines by neighborhood on a schedule that runs through 2031.
